Confusing word choices

Their v there v they’re

Word choice and avoiding confusion – here's my quick tip on how to differentiate between their, there and they're.

They all sound the same. And they look similar. But these words aren’t even related. Here’s an explanation.

Their: Possessive of they – belonging to them.

  • The staff at the regional office had their own set of procedures.

There: That place – not here.

  • A man was hiding over there when the office was broken into.

It can be also used to introduce a sentence – although this isn’t recommended.

  • There was a man hiding in the office when it was broken into.

They’re: A contraction (shortened form) of they are.

  • They’re going to move into their new office next week.
